How to Create Great How-To Videos for Your Small Business

Video is hot online, YouTube is the second highest search engine on the internet, so you need to figure how to incorporate original video content into your content marketing strategy. How-to videos are most popular among video searches.  So, how do you create a great how-to video for your small business?  As a former TV producer in my past career I have a few thoughts on exactly how to do a great how-to video series. You first need to make a list of quick things you can teach.

Start with customer pain points. What are your customers struggling to learn? Can you show them how to fix their own problem? Start with a list of 10 things that would make a good how-to video.

Develop easy steps. It’s hard for people to remember more than 5 steps for anything, so break down your process into 3 to 5 easy steps that are memorable. Be sure to use language and processes that you want to be known for.  This video is also about branding your expertise. Try to come up with a bullet point for each step that can be reinforced with graphics on screen while you are talking.

Write a script. The best how-to videos are 2 minutes or less.  The shorter your video is, the more likely it will be shared. One way to keep your videos tight is to write a script.  I would suggest give yourself a few bullet points, if you write down exactly what you are going to say, you could come off on camera like you are reading. You always want to build rapport with the audience.

Use free tools. The pros use a teleprompter and you should, too. Download a free teleprompter app to an iPad or tablet device and use it as a teleprompter so that you can stay on message and not ramble. The worst thing you can do is look like you are thinking about the next thing you are going to say.

Get someone to help you. You’ll need another set of hands to help you record yourself, especially if you are using a teleprompter to keep you on message. This person might also be able to add your graphics after the fact.

Feature your video on your blog. One of the best ways to get the word out about new content is the share it on your blog. Be sure to write a description of your video under your video link. Post your video to your branded Youtube channel too with keyword tags so that you generate search engine traffic for your content as well. Posting it to your blog makes it easy to share in social media, too.

If you develop great how-to videos, you could create a whole new audience for your small business.
